Warning: this trace may contain spoilers. Follow the most important Barcelona settings in Carlos Ruiz Zafón's Cemetery of Forgotten Books cycle, from Daniel Sempere's first descent into a secret library to David Martín's haunted writing life, Fermín's imprisonment and Alicia Gris's final investigation. The route joins real streets and institutions to clearly marked fictional or composite addresses: Zafón's Barcelona is not a documentary map, but a deliberately stylised city where history, memory and storytelling overlap.
Hemingway's books were often shaped across several addresses rather than born at a single desk. This trace follows five surviving places where the record is unusually clear: a manuscript was revised, passages were written, a novel was composed, or the final pages were completed. Each stop is paired with one book and states the site's role precisely.
Sylvia Beach’s bookshop at 12 rue de l’Odéon connected James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and other expatriate writers. The address tells a precise story about publishing and shared literary space.
John Steinbeck made the Salinas Valley the setting of East of Eden, drawing its weather, farmland and family histories into the lives of the Hamiltons and Trasks. His childhood house survives in Salinas; the valley beyond it remains a working agricultural landscape. For Netflix's adaptation, released on October 1, 2026, Zoe Kazan's production found its period California across the Pacific. New Zealand supplied preserved streets, open country and purpose-built homes. These places connect the novel's real Californian roots with the Otago locations used to represent them on screen, from Ōamaru's limestone precinct to the Hawkdun foothills.
Stephen King’s fictional Maine borrows recognizable features from the state’s towns, roads and public landmarks. Derry, Castle Rock and Jerusalem’s Lot are inventions, rather than places that correspond street for street with a real town. Bangor supplies several of Derry’s landmarks and the canal that helped King imagine IT. Bridgton appears under its own name in The Mist, whose supermarket has a documented local counterpart. In Orrington, a rental beside a truck route and a pet cemetery contributed to Pet Sematary. These five locations show specific connections between real surroundings and fiction, from a municipal reservoir to an ordinary grocery store.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula moves across a surprisingly concrete geography. Jonathan Harker travels from Bistrița into the Carpathians; the Demeter carries Dracula from Varna to Whitby; boxes of earth are moved to Purfleet and London; and the pursuit eventually turns east again through the Black Sea and Danube region. This Tracespot follows the real places Stoker names and the landscapes that shaped the novel. Castle Dracula itself is deliberately absent: Stoker places it somewhere beyond the Borgo Pass but does not give a real location that can be pinned honestly.
Across the cycle
El Raval, Barcelona, Spain
The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is fictional. This real, narrow Raval street is the conventional marker used by Barcelona's official Zafón route for its hidden entrance, not the address of an actual secret library. Here Daniel Sempere adopts Julián Carax's novel and begins the mystery that binds generations of writers, booksellers and investigators. Later volumes return to the labyrinth and reveal more of its history, turning it into the cycle's symbol of memory rescued from deliberate erasure.

The Shadow of the Wind; The Prisoner of Heaven
Barri Gòtic, Barcelona, Spain
Zafón places book collector Gustavo Barceló and his niece Clara near this grand arcaded square. Daniel's youthful infatuation with Clara opens a door into the adult world of rare books, hidden histories and painful illusions. The square is also where Daniel encounters the destitute Fermín Romero de Torres. The Prisoner of Heaven later reveals the wartime past behind Fermín's arrival, transforming a chance meeting into the fulfilment of a promise made in captivity.

The Labyrinth of the Spirits
Barri Gòtic, Barcelona, Spain
A café at this address becomes one of Alicia Gris's recurring bases in the final novel, opposite the apartment from which she watches the street. The historical venue described by guides has since closed; this marker identifies the address, not a preserved Zafón attraction. Alicia arrives as an investigator shaped by war and recruited to find the missing Mauricio Valls. Her work at and around the café draws the Sempere family into a conspiracy that connects state violence, stolen stories and the unresolved fate of Daniel's mother.

The Labyrinth of the Spirits
Carrer del Bisbe Caçador 3, Barcelona, Spain
Inside the academy's historic Palau Requesens, Alicia consults journalist Sergio Vilajuana among shelves of books. The meeting turns literary research into detective work as the hidden writings of Víctor Mataix begin to illuminate Valls's secrets. Unlike the cycle's invented libraries, the academy and its research library are real. The setting lets Zafón mirror the secret Cemetery with a public institution devoted to preserving language, history and written culture.

The Angel's Game
La Ribera, Barcelona, Spain
The Gothic basilica anchors the Ribera neighbourhood around which much of David Martín's Barcelona turns. Its austere scale and the surrounding medieval lanes give physical form to a novel preoccupied with faith, authorship and the seductive power of belief. David's commission from Andreas Corelli promises wealth in exchange for a book capable of founding a new religion. Close to David's home on Flassaders, the church becomes a resonant real counterpoint to the dangerous creed he is being paid to invent.

The Angel's Game
El Born, Barcelona, Spain
David Martín's brooding tower house is a fictional transformation of this real address. The present building does not match the impossible mansion in the novel, so the pin marks Zafón's chosen street number rather than a surviving character home. David moves here to write, but the house preserves traces of an earlier writer and a previous bargain. As illness, obsession and Corelli's commission close around him, the home becomes both workshop and trap—and a crucial bridge to the Sempere family's later history.

The Shadow of the Wind
Carrer de Montsió 3, Barcelona, Spain
The real Modernista café enters the recovered story of Julián Carax, allowing Daniel's investigation to pass through a place already famous for Barcelona's artists and bohemians. Its genuine cultural mythology makes Carax's vanished world feel almost recoverable. As Daniel interviews survivors and follows fragments of memory, locations like Els Quatre Gats show his method: the city itself functions as an archive, but every witness edits the past before handing it on.

Across the cycle
Barri Gòtic, Barcelona, Spain
The Sempere bookshop is fictional, although Zafón's official maps point to number 27 on this real street. No canonical shop interior survives here; the address is a literary marker for the family business that holds the four novels together. The shop shelters Daniel, gives Fermín work and connects David Martín with Isabella and the Sempere family. By the finale it is more than a business: it is the everyday counterpart to the hidden Cemetery, keeping books and people alive through loyalty rather than secrecy.

The Shadow of the Wind
Carrer de la Canuda 6, Barcelona, Spain
At this nineteenth-century cultural institution, Daniel is introduced to Clara Barceló, the blind reader whose knowledge of Julián Carax first seems to promise a way into the author's lost life. Daniel's romantic idealisation of Clara eventually collapses, but the encounter establishes one of the cycle's central patterns: books create intimacy quickly, while understanding another person takes longer and often arrives painfully.

The Angel's Game
Gràcia, Barcelona, Spain
Near the park's Carrer d'Olot entrance, Andreas Corelli receives David in an elegant villa that belongs to the novel's supernatural geography. The house is fictional and should not be confused with one of Gaudí's preserved buildings. Corelli's offer appears to rescue David's career, yet its terms steadily consume his freedom and certainty. Setting their encounter beside Gaudí's dreamlike architecture lets Zafón keep both explanations alive: occult seduction and a writer's destabilised perception.

The Shadow of the Wind
Sant Gervasi–La Bonanova, Barcelona, Spain
Number 32 is used as the marker for the Aldayas' mansion, the Angel of Mist, but Zafón's ruined Gothic-Modernista house is fictional or composite. The avenue's real villas supply the atmosphere; visitors should not treat the present property as a canonical film set. The mansion holds the forbidden love of Julián Carax and Penélope Aldaya and the catastrophe concealed by her family. Daniel's return there brings his investigation into violent contact with the past, completing the parallel between his own love story and Carax's.

The Prisoner of Heaven; The Labyrinth of the Spirits
Montjuïc, Barcelona, Spain
The third novel turns this real fortress and former political prison into the darkest junction in the cycle. Fermín is incarcerated here after the Civil War and meets David Martín, held by the ambitious prison director Mauricio Valls. Their attempted escape, a stolen key and David's demand that Fermín protect Isabella's child explain loyalties that once looked accidental. The final novel returns to the crimes tied to Valls, making Montjuïc the historical wound beneath the Sempere family's private mysteries.
