Sylvia Beach’s bookshop at 12 rue de l’Odéon connected James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and other expatriate writers. The address tells a precise story about publishing and shared literary space.
Hemingway's books were often shaped across several addresses rather than born at a single desk. This trace follows five surviving places where the record is unusually clear: a manuscript was revised, passages were written, a novel was composed, or the final pages were completed. Each stop is paired with one book and states the site's role precisely.
Warning: this trace may contain spoilers. Follow the most important Barcelona settings in Carlos Ruiz Zafón's Cemetery of Forgotten Books cycle, from Daniel Sempere's first descent into a secret library to David Martín's haunted writing life, Fermín's imprisonment and Alicia Gris's final investigation. The route joins real streets and institutions to clearly marked fictional or composite addresses: Zafón's Barcelona is not a documentary map, but a deliberately stylised city where history, memory and storytelling overlap.
John Steinbeck made the Salinas Valley the setting of East of Eden, drawing its weather, farmland and family histories into the lives of the Hamiltons and Trasks. His childhood house survives in Salinas; the valley beyond it remains a working agricultural landscape. For Netflix's adaptation, released on October 1, 2026, Zoe Kazan's production found its period California across the Pacific. New Zealand supplied preserved streets, open country and purpose-built homes. These places connect the novel's real Californian roots with the Otago locations used to represent them on screen, from Ōamaru's limestone precinct to the Hawkdun foothills.
Stephen King’s fictional Maine borrows recognizable features from the state’s towns, roads and public landmarks. Derry, Castle Rock and Jerusalem’s Lot are inventions, rather than places that correspond street for street with a real town. Bangor supplies several of Derry’s landmarks and the canal that helped King imagine IT. Bridgton appears under its own name in The Mist, whose supermarket has a documented local counterpart. In Orrington, a rental beside a truck route and a pet cemetery contributed to Pet Sematary. These five locations show specific connections between real surroundings and fiction, from a municipal reservoir to an ordinary grocery store.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula moves across a surprisingly concrete geography. Jonathan Harker travels from Bistrița into the Carpathians; the Demeter carries Dracula from Varna to Whitby; boxes of earth are moved to Purfleet and London; and the pursuit eventually turns east again through the Black Sea and Danube region. This Tracespot follows the real places Stoker names and the landscapes that shaped the novel. Castle Dracula itself is deliberately absent: Stoker places it somewhere beyond the Borgo Pass but does not give a real location that can be pinned honestly.

12 rue de l’Odéon, Paris, France
Beach’s shop at 12 rue de l’Odéon functioned as a bookshop, lending library and informal address for expatriate writers. Joyce, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald belonged to its overlapping network. Beach published Joyce’s Ulysses in 1922 when other publishers would not. The modern Shakespeare and Company at 37 rue de la Bûcherie is a later, separate shop; this pin marks Beach’s historical address.
