Bram Stoker’s Dracula moves across a surprisingly concrete geography. Jonathan Harker travels from Bistrița into the Carpathians; the Demeter carries Dracula from Varna to Whitby; boxes of earth are moved to Purfleet and London; and the pursuit eventually turns east again through the Black Sea and Danube region. This Tracespot follows the real places Stoker names and the landscapes that shaped the novel. Castle Dracula itself is deliberately absent: Stoker places it somewhere beyond the Borgo Pass but does not give a real location that can be pinned honestly.
Hemingway's books were often shaped across several addresses rather than born at a single desk. This trace follows five surviving places where the record is unusually clear: a manuscript was revised, passages were written, a novel was composed, or the final pages were completed. Each stop is paired with one book and states the site's role precisely.
Warning: this trace may contain spoilers. Follow the most important Barcelona settings in Carlos Ruiz Zafón's Cemetery of Forgotten Books cycle, from Daniel Sempere's first descent into a secret library to David Martín's haunted writing life, Fermín's imprisonment and Alicia Gris's final investigation. The route joins real streets and institutions to clearly marked fictional or composite addresses: Zafón's Barcelona is not a documentary map, but a deliberately stylised city where history, memory and storytelling overlap.
Sylvia Beach’s bookshop at 12 rue de l’Odéon connected James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and other expatriate writers. The address tells a precise story about publishing and shared literary space.
John Steinbeck made the Salinas Valley the setting of East of Eden, drawing its weather, farmland and family histories into the lives of the Hamiltons and Trasks. His childhood house survives in Salinas; the valley beyond it remains a working agricultural landscape. For Netflix's adaptation, released on October 1, 2026, Zoe Kazan's production found its period California across the Pacific. New Zealand supplied preserved streets, open country and purpose-built homes. These places connect the novel's real Californian roots with the Otago locations used to represent them on screen, from Ōamaru's limestone precinct to the Hawkdun foothills.
Stephen King’s fictional Maine borrows recognizable features from the state’s towns, roads and public landmarks. Derry, Castle Rock and Jerusalem’s Lot are inventions, rather than places that correspond street for street with a real town. Bangor supplies several of Derry’s landmarks and the canal that helped King imagine IT. Bridgton appears under its own name in The Mist, whose supermarket has a documented local counterpart. In Orrington, a rental beside a truck route and a pet cemetery contributed to Pet Sematary. These five locations show specific connections between real surroundings and fiction, from a municipal reservoir to an ordinary grocery store.

Bistrița, Romania
Jonathan Harker reaches Bistritz, today’s Bistrița, after travelling east through Central Europe. Dracula has arranged a room for him at the Golden Krone Hotel and a place on the coach toward Bukovina. Stoker uses the real town as the last recognisable urban stop before Harker enters the mountain landscape. The letter waiting for him says Dracula’s carriage will meet the coach at the Borgo Pass.

Tihuța Pass, Bistrița-Năsăud County, Romania
The real Tihuța Pass is the mountain crossing Stoker calls the Borgo Pass. Harker’s public coach enters the pass at night, where Dracula’s private carriage is waiting to take him farther into the mountains. Stoker never visited this region and gives no mappable location for Castle Dracula. The pass is therefore the last real geographic anchor before the novel moves into an invented landscape.

Varna, Bulgaria
The Demeter leaves Varna carrying silver sand and fifty boxes of earth. Its log records a crew of five hands, two mates, a cook and the captain, then follows the ship through the Bosphorus and Mediterranean as the men disappear one by one. Varna matters twice in the novel. It is the starting point of Dracula’s journey to England, and later the place where his pursuers wait for a different ship they believe will bring him back east.

Tate Hill Sands and East Cliff, Whitby, England
During a storm, the unmanned Demeter runs into Whitby harbour and comes ashore below East Cliff. A large dog jumps from the wreck and runs up the 199 Steps toward St Mary’s churchyard. This is Dracula’s arrival in England. Stoker knew the setting from his 1890 stay in Whitby. He had also heard about the Russian ship Dmitry, which was wrecked on Tate Hill Sands in 1885. English Heritage identifies that real wreck, the harbour, churchyard and steps as material Stoker reshaped for the novel.

Purfleet-on-Thames, Essex, England
Dracula buys an estate called Carfax near Purfleet before he reaches England. The house and its exact position are fictional, so this marker represents the real town Stoker names rather than a supposed location for the estate. After the Demeter reaches Whitby, Dracula’s boxes of earth are sent by rail and delivered to Carfax. The move brings the story from the Yorkshire coast into the Thames-side geography around London.

Hampstead Heath, London, England
