Stage 1
Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
For the early 2026/27 Great Walk season DOC directs walkers to begin at Mangatepopo Carpark because fire damage closed the Whakapapa-Mangatepopo link. DOC expects the repaired link to restore the full loop from mid-December 2026.

Stage 2
Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
From Mangatepopo the track climbs over old lava flows from Ngauruhoe toward South Crater and Red Crater. The descent passes the mineral-coloured Emerald Lakes, the highest and most exposed part of the circuit.
Stage 3
Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
The track drops across stark lava formations to Oturere. Construction delays pushed the new hut and campsite opening to 18 December 2026, an important constraint for early-season walkers.

Stage 4
Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
The next stage crosses stream valleys and older volcanic terrain around the eastern side of Ngauruhoe to Waihohonu. The landscape becomes less barren away from the active crater zone.

Stage 5
Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
Whakapapa is the endpoint for the shortened early-season route. Once the repaired Mangatepopo link reopens, walkers can again continue from here to complete a true loop.
