Stage 1
Annapurna, Nepal
Besisahar is the traditional eastern gateway to the Annapurna Circuit. The old route follows the Marsyangdi valley upstream, although road construction means many modern itineraries now begin farther up the valley.

Stage 2
Annapurna, Nepal
By Chame the circuit has climbed into pine forest and much steeper Himalayan terrain. The district centre is a practical overnight stop before the route continues into upper Manang.

Stage 3
Annapurna, Nepal
Manang, at roughly 3,500 metres, is the classic acclimatisation stop. Trekkers commonly spend an extra day here before moving above 4,000 metres.

Stage 4
Annapurna, Nepal
Thorong Phedi is the last main stop below the pass from the Manang side. The summit day usually begins before dawn because it combines the highest climb with a very long descent.

Stage 5
Annapurna, Nepal
Thorong La is the high point of the circuit at about 5,416 metres. Prayer flags mark the saddle; altitude, wind and snow make this the decisive stage of the trek.
Stage 6
Annapurna, Nepal
The descent reaches Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Its temple complex gives this stop a cultural importance separate from its role as the first major settlement after the pass.

Stage 7
Annapurna, Nepal
Jomsom lies lower in the Kali Gandaki valley in the rain shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Many modern trekkers finish or connect to transport here, while the historical circuit continues south.
