Terry Fox — The Marathon of Hope

Fox began beside St. John’s Harbour after dipping his artificial leg into Atlantic water. His plan was starkly simple: average roughly a marathon a day across Canada and raise money for cancer research. He started with little public attention, accompanied by his friend and driver Doug Alward in a donated camper van. The bronze Mile Zero memorial now fixes that quiet departure to the waterfront.

By Gander, Fox had covered 346 kilometres through cold, wind and freezing rain. A response in nearby Gambo changed his sense of what the run might become: people lined the road and handed over small donations without ceremony. The moment convinced him that the Marathon of Hope could grow beyond a private test of endurance into a national campaign.

At the western edge of Newfoundland, Port aux Basques met Fox’s ideal almost exactly. A community then counted at about 10,000 people raised $10,000 before his departure, later adding another $4,000. The ferry crossing ended the first hard chapter: 548 miles across an island where the weather had repeatedly tested his new running rhythm.

In Dartmouth, fifty vocational-school students ran with Fox after raising about $3,000. Encounters like this turned anonymous highway miles into direct conversations about cancer research. Fox’s daily routine still began before dawn and could run into the evening; the public events happened around, not instead of, the marathon-distance work.

Crowds came out in Charlottetown to cheer and donate. Fox ran more than twenty-eight miles that day despite cold conditions and another dizzy spell. He often kept his running leg visible rather than covering it with sweatpants, making the physical reality of the effort impossible to abstract away.

After days fighting headwinds along Highway 185, Fox reached Quebec City. There he met Gérard Côté, the four-time Boston Marathon winner, and appeared on the front page of Le Soleil. The meeting placed his unconventional stride inside Canada’s longer running history, even as his purpose remained fundraising rather than competition.

Fox entered Montreal with Alouettes kicker Don Sweet and four wheelchair athletes. The solitary image of one runner beside a van was giving way to a moving public event. He had now covered 1,813 miles, still building the campaign through one roadside meeting, school visit and city reception after another.

On Canada Day, Fox received a standing ovation from more than 16,000 spectators at a Canadian Football League exhibition game. He kicked the opening ball with his natural leg. The national stage was growing, but the next morning still meant returning to the road and the same uneven, energy-consuming step.

In Toronto, Fox met hockey hero Darryl Sittler, who gave him his 1980 NHL All-Star sweater. The reception showed how far the campaign had travelled from its almost unnoticed start. Fox resisted turning that attention into celebrity. In nearby Scarborough he told thousands that the fame belonged to the run and its cancer-research purpose, not to him.

Fox turned twenty-two in Gravenhurst, celebrating with about 2,000 people at the civic centre. The town of roughly 8,000 raised $14,000 and one gift was a new artificial limb. The birthday marked no rest from the larger schedule. Northern Ontario, with its long gaps and exposed roads, still lay ahead.

A spring in Fox’s artificial leg snapped near Sault Ste. Marie. After a radio station announced the problem, a local welder drove out and repaired it in about ninety minutes. The episode captures the run’s improvised machinery: one prosthesis, one van and a widening network of strangers determined to keep the project moving.
