From 17 September to 5 November 2006, Dean Karnazes covered a marathon distance in every U.S. state on fifty consecutive days. This compressed trace uses thirteen editorial milestones to make the continental scale legible while naming all fifty states; several weekend runs were live races, while most weekday efforts followed established marathon courses outside their normal event dates.
In 1980, twenty-one-year-old Terry Fox set out to run across Canada on an artificial leg, asking Canadians to fund cancer research one dollar at a time. This trace follows selected documented milestones from the Atlantic at St. John’s to the highway outside Thunder Bay, where cancer in his lungs forced him to stop after 143 days and 5,374 kilometres.
In July 2006, David Goggins made his Badwater 135 debut on the road from Death Valley’s Badwater Basin to Whitney Portal. He finished fifth overall in 30:18:54 during a race that reached 123°F and later brought rain, hail and flash flooding. This trace follows the official course checkpoints that shaped his breakthrough performance.
In 1984, Greek ultrarunner Yiannis Kouros covered the Spartathlon course from Athens to Sparta in 20 hours 25 minutes, improving his own winning time from the race's first edition. This trace follows the defining landmarks of that 245-kilometre crossing and the performance that established Kouros as an ultrarunning legend. His record stood until Fotis Zisimopoulos ran 19:55:09 in 2023.
In 1983, 61-year-old potato farmer Cliff Young won the inaugural 875-kilometre Sydney–Melbourne ultramarathon in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. The familiar claim that he never slept is an exaggeration: contemporary recollections say an alarm-clock mistake sent him out early on the first night and that he then slept very little. This trace follows the old Hume Highway towns behind the shuffle, the gap and an Australian sporting folk story.
After her husband Clive died of prostate cancer, Rosie Swale-Pope set out from Tenby on her 57th birthday to run around the Northern Hemisphere. Pulling a small shelter-cart and travelling without a support crew, she covered roughly 32,000 kilometres over almost five years, raising money for a Russian children's charity and awareness of early prostate-cancer diagnosis. This trace uses documented milestones rather than pretending that a journey of this scale was a continuous road route across oceans.
Days 1–4 · Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas
St. Louis, Missouri, United States
The project opened at the Lewis & Clark Marathon in the St. Louis area on 17 September 2006. Memphis, the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Little Rock followed on consecutive days, immediately replacing recovery with buses, course briefings and another start line. States covered in this chapter: Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.

Days 5–8 · Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado
Boulder County, Colorado, United States
Wichita, Des Moines and Lincoln led into the Boulder Backroads Marathon, one of the conventional races accepted by the 50 States Marathon Club. Eight marathon distances had now been completed in eight straight days. States covered in this chapter: Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado.

Regional chapter · Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana
Casper, Wyoming, United States
Casper’s mile-high elevation made the ninth marathon a visible test of how little the tour could control: altitude, weather and travel accumulated while the daily distance stayed fixed at 26.2 miles. States covered in this chapter: Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana. The marker represents the documented Casper stop; the grouping compresses four separate state runs.

Regional chapter · Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Alaska
Portland, Oregon, United States
The Portland Marathon was another true race-day event within a schedule mostly assembled from certified or established courses run on quiet weekdays. Alaska added the project’s most punishing air transfer to the northwestern chapter. States covered in this chapter: Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Alaska. The Portland marker is the documented live-race anchor for four distinct state marathons.

Regional chapter · California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii
San Francisco, California, United States
Western courses swung between coastal air, desert heat and the flight to Hawaii. The changing surfaces mattered less than the governing rule of the project: every calendar day ended with another marathon distance completed. States covered in this chapter: California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii. This marker is an editorial geographic anchor; each state was a separate run.

Regional chapter · Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma
St. George, Utah, United States
At Utah’s St. George Marathon, Karnazes recorded one of the tour’s fastest race performances despite the miles already in his legs. New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma extended the southwestern sweep. States covered in this chapter: Utah, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. St. George was one of the conventional race-day marathons recognized by the 50 States Marathon Club.

Regional chapter · Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida
Atlanta, Georgia, United States
The southern chapter carried the caravan from Louisiana through Alabama and Georgia to Florida. Repeating the distance was only one system; food, sleep, medical checks and overnight transfers had to repeat with it. States covered in this chapter: Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The Atlanta marker represents this editorial grouping, not a claim that the four runs shared one course.

Regional chapter · South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia
Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
Four more courses threaded north through the Carolinas, Virginia and West Virginia. Runners from local communities often joined Karnazes, turning otherwise unofficial weekday course runs into small moving gatherings. States covered in this chapter: South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. The Charlotte marker is a regional narrative anchor.

Through marathon 35 · Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan
Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States
Grand Rapids was marathon number 35. A Runner’s World editor joined the caravan and described a small operations team coordinating courses, transport, coaching, filming and the runners who appeared each morning. States covered in this chapter: Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Grand Rapids provides a precisely documented point in the sequence.

Marathon 36 onward · Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota
Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois, United States
The Chicago Marathon was number 36, one day after Grand Rapids. Unlike most stops, it unfolded inside a major live race, with crowds and closed streets replacing the tour’s smaller weekday formations. States covered in this chapter: Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Chicago was one of the conventional race-day results accepted by the 50 States Marathon Club.

New England compressed six states into the closing phase. Karnazes ran the Boston Marathon course outside its April race date, then continued through Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. States covered in this chapter: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Reports from Maine confirm the rapid Boston-to-Rhode Island-to-northern-New-England sequence.
