After her husband Clive died of prostate cancer, Rosie Swale-Pope set out from Tenby on her 57th birthday to run around the Northern Hemisphere. Pulling a small shelter-cart and travelling without a support crew, she covered roughly 32,000 kilometres over almost five years, raising money for a Russian children's charity and awareness of early prostate-cancer diagnosis. This trace uses documented milestones rather than pretending that a journey of this scale was a continuous road route across oceans.
In 1980, twenty-one-year-old Terry Fox set out to run across Canada on an artificial leg, asking Canadians to fund cancer research one dollar at a time. This trace follows selected documented milestones from the Atlantic at St. John’s to the highway outside Thunder Bay, where cancer in his lungs forced him to stop after 143 days and 5,374 kilometres.
From 17 September to 5 November 2006, Dean Karnazes covered a marathon distance in every U.S. state on fifty consecutive days. This compressed trace uses thirteen editorial milestones to make the continental scale legible while naming all fifty states; several weekend runs were live races, while most weekday efforts followed established marathon courses outside their normal event dates.
In July 2006, David Goggins made his Badwater 135 debut on the road from Death Valley’s Badwater Basin to Whitney Portal. He finished fifth overall in 30:18:54 during a race that reached 123°F and later brought rain, hail and flash flooding. This trace follows the official course checkpoints that shaped his breakthrough performance.
In 1984, Greek ultrarunner Yiannis Kouros covered the Spartathlon course from Athens to Sparta in 20 hours 25 minutes, improving his own winning time from the race's first edition. This trace follows the defining landmarks of that 245-kilometre crossing and the performance that established Kouros as an ultrarunning legend. His record stood until Fotis Zisimopoulos ran 19:55:09 in 2023.
In 1983, 61-year-old potato farmer Cliff Young won the inaugural 875-kilometre Sydney–Melbourne ultramarathon in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. The familiar claim that he never slept is an exaggeration: contemporary recollections say an alarm-clock mistake sent him out early on the first night and that he then slept very little. This trace follows the old Hume Highway towns behind the shuffle, the gap and an Australian sporting folk story.
2 October 2003
Tenby, Wales, United Kingdom
Swale-Pope left her home town on her 57th birthday. The run was conceived after Clive's death from prostate cancer: a journey to promote early diagnosis and to support charitable work, undertaken with her supplies carried in a small cart that also served as shelter.

2003
London, England, United Kingdom
From Wales she ran through London and onward to the coast before taking a ferry across the Channel. Her planned land route continued through the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and the Baltic states toward Russia.

5 April 2004
Moscow, Russia
By early April 2004 she had reached Moscow. The capital was not the end of the European leg so much as the threshold of the largest section: thousands of kilometres east along the Trans-Siberian corridor.

15 September 2005
Magadan, Russia
Swale-Pope reached Magadan in Russia's far east after crossing Siberia. Public accounts place her there in September 2005; from the Pacific coast she transferred to Alaska because the Bering Strait cannot be crossed on foot as part of a continuous road journey.

February 2006
Yukon–Koyukuk, Alaska, United States
A winter storm trapped Swale-Pope on Henry Island in the Yukon River in temperatures reported near −50°C. With frostbite threatening her foot, she was airlifted for treatment. She later returned to the route rather than treating the rescue as the end of the attempt.

October 2006
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
After returning to the road in spring, Swale-Pope reached Edmonton in October 2006. The city became a temporary base: she paused her west-to-east crossing for an invited charity appearance at the Chicago Marathon, then flew back to Edmonton and resumed the world run.

22 October 2006
Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Chicago was a deliberate detour rather than the next continuous point on the route. Invited to support charity work, Swale-Pope completed the 2006 Chicago Marathon in 4 hours 40 minutes, then returned to Edmonton to continue east.

2 October 2007
New York, United States
Swale-Pope reached New York exactly four years after leaving Tenby. The Atlantic coast closed the overland North American section, but the journey home still required Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and a final run through Britain.

24 January 2008
St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
She left Canada from St. John's in January 2008. From this point the trace necessarily becomes a chain of runs joined by sea and air transfers: the public chronology records a short visit to Greenland before she flew onward to Iceland.

February 2008
Reykjavík, Iceland
Arriving in Reykjavík, Swale-Pope began the Icelandic section of the homeward arc. An account of the journey says she still faced about a thousand miles across Iceland; another chronology records that she continued running toward the east of the country.

31 May 2008
Tórshavn, Faroe Islands
By the end of May she was in Tórshavn, living from the same compact cart she had pulled across continents. A local account records her at the city's campsite and preparing for the last sea crossing toward Scotland.

18 June 2008
Scrabster, Scotland, United Kingdom
At 5 a.m. on 18 June, Swale-Pope stepped from the ferry at Scrabster and returned to Britain for the first time since 2003. The home country was not the finish: hundreds of miles still separated Scotland's north coast from Tenby.

25 August 2008
Tenby, Wales, United Kingdom
Swale-Pope returned to Tenby on 25 August 2008 after roughly 32,000 kilometres and nearly five years. Stress fractures forced her onto crutches for the final miles, but a crowd met her at the same town from which the circle had begun.
