The famous Marathon-to-Athens death run is not the story Herodotus recorded. His Pheidippides was a professional Athenian courier sent roughly 250 kilometres to Sparta before the battle in 490 BCE; Herodotus names Mount Parthenion and says he reached Sparta the next day. Centuries later, Plutarch described a victory runner under other names, and Lucian attached Pheidippides to the Marathon-to-Athens run. That later tradition—revived in the 1896 Olympics—created the modern marathon. This trace keeps the attested journey, later legend and modern race visibly separate.
In 1980, twenty-one-year-old Terry Fox set out to run across Canada on an artificial leg, asking Canadians to fund cancer research one dollar at a time. This trace follows selected documented milestones from the Atlantic at St. John’s to the highway outside Thunder Bay, where cancer in his lungs forced him to stop after 143 days and 5,374 kilometres.
From 17 September to 5 November 2006, Dean Karnazes covered a marathon distance in every U.S. state on fifty consecutive days. This compressed trace uses thirteen editorial milestones to make the continental scale legible while naming all fifty states; several weekend runs were live races, while most weekday efforts followed established marathon courses outside their normal event dates.
In July 2006, David Goggins made his Badwater 135 debut on the road from Death Valley’s Badwater Basin to Whitney Portal. He finished fifth overall in 30:18:54 during a race that reached 123°F and later brought rain, hail and flash flooding. This trace follows the official course checkpoints that shaped his breakthrough performance.
In 1984, Greek ultrarunner Yiannis Kouros covered the Spartathlon course from Athens to Sparta in 20 hours 25 minutes, improving his own winning time from the race's first edition. This trace follows the defining landmarks of that 245-kilometre crossing and the performance that established Kouros as an ultrarunning legend. His record stood until Fotis Zisimopoulos ran 19:55:09 in 2023.
In 1983, 61-year-old potato farmer Cliff Young won the inaugural 875-kilometre Sydney–Melbourne ultramarathon in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. The familiar claim that he never slept is an exaggeration: contemporary recollections say an alarm-clock mistake sent him out early on the first night and that he then slept very little. This trace follows the old Hume Highway towns behind the shuffle, the gap and an Australian sporting folk story.
490 BCE
Ancient Agora, Athens, Greece
Herodotus says the Athenian generals sent Pheidippides, a professional long-distance courier, to Sparta while still in the city. He was carrying a plea for military help against the Persian landing at Marathon—not yet news of an Athenian victory.

Above Tegea, Arcadia, Greece
This is the only intermediate landscape Herodotus names. Pheidippides later reported that Pan called to him on Mount Parthenion above Tegea and asked why Athens neglected the god despite his goodwill. The story led Athens to establish a sanctuary to Pan beneath the Acropolis.

490 BCE
Ancient Sparta, Greece
Herodotus says Pheidippides reached Sparta on the day after leaving Athens, the extraordinary feat later tested by the Spartathlon. The Spartans promised help but said religious observance prevented them from marching before the full moon.

Marathon, Greece
The battle gave the race its name, but Herodotus never places Pheidippides in a victory run from this field to Athens. Roughly five centuries later, Plutarch told of a messenger under the names Thersippus or Eucles; Lucian later fused the messenger with Pheidippides. The familiar death run belongs to that later literary tradition.

Later literary tradition
Athens, Greece
In the later version, the runner reaches Athens, announces victory and dies. Its emotional economy is perfect—one message, one final breath—but it is not contemporary evidence. Treating it as legend does not diminish its cultural force; it explains how a story could outgrow the older, longer run to Sparta.

Michel Bréal proposed a race from Marathon to Athens for the first modern Olympics, turning the later messenger legend into a new athletic form. Spyridon Louis won the Olympic race and entered the Panathenaic Stadium; from this modern invention grew the marathon run worldwide.
