In October 1982, RAF Wing Commander John Foden and fellow runners John Scholtens and John McCarthy set out to test one sentence in Herodotus: could a person cover roughly 250 kilometres from Athens to Sparta within a day and a half? They reconstructed a plausible corridor across five mountain ranges and all three finished in under forty hours. Their experiment did not prove Pheidippides took this exact modern route, but it demonstrated the physical possibility and inspired the first international Spartathlon in 1983.
In 1980, twenty-one-year-old Terry Fox set out to run across Canada on an artificial leg, asking Canadians to fund cancer research one dollar at a time. This trace follows selected documented milestones from the Atlantic at St. John’s to the highway outside Thunder Bay, where cancer in his lungs forced him to stop after 143 days and 5,374 kilometres.
From 17 September to 5 November 2006, Dean Karnazes covered a marathon distance in every U.S. state on fifty consecutive days. This compressed trace uses thirteen editorial milestones to make the continental scale legible while naming all fifty states; several weekend runs were live races, while most weekday efforts followed established marathon courses outside their normal event dates.
In July 2006, David Goggins made his Badwater 135 debut on the road from Death Valley’s Badwater Basin to Whitney Portal. He finished fifth overall in 30:18:54 during a race that reached 123°F and later brought rain, hail and flash flooding. This trace follows the official course checkpoints that shaped his breakthrough performance.
In 1984, Greek ultrarunner Yiannis Kouros covered the Spartathlon course from Athens to Sparta in 20 hours 25 minutes, improving his own winning time from the race's first edition. This trace follows the defining landmarks of that 245-kilometre crossing and the performance that established Kouros as an ultrarunning legend. His record stood until Fotis Zisimopoulos ran 19:55:09 in 2023.
In 1983, 61-year-old potato farmer Cliff Young won the inaugural 875-kilometre Sydney–Melbourne ultramarathon in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. The familiar claim that he never slept is an exaggeration: contemporary recollections say an alarm-clock mistake sent him out early on the first night and that he then slept very little. This trace follows the old Hume Highway towns behind the shuffle, the gap and an Australian sporting folk story.
8 October 1982
Athens, Greece
Foden, Scholtens and McCarthy set out from Athens to test whether Herodotus's next-day arrival could be physically possible. They were reconstructing a likely corridor, not claiming that the ancient runner had followed every modern road now used by the race.

8 October 1982
Elefsina, Greece
The reconstructed route left Athens westward through Eleusis, following the broad historical logic of the Sacred Way before turning along the Saronic coast. Even in 1982, parts of the road toward Corinth were described as little better than farm track.

8 October 1982
Isthmia, Greece
The runners reached the narrow isthmus at Corinth, the unavoidable geographical gate into the Peloponnese. The canal itself is modern, but the crossing preserves the route's ancient logic: any plausible Athens–Sparta journey had to negotiate this neck of land.

Archaia Korinthos, Greece
Beyond the canal, the expedition turned inland through Ancient Corinth. The modern Spartathlon roadbook still fixes a checkpoint here, making the ruins a durable bridge between Foden's reconstruction and the race it inspired.

Ancient Nemea, Greece
Near Nemea, the road left the easier coastal country and the expedition began to break apart. Historical reconstruction records another RAF participant stopping around this section with severe sunburn; Foden, Scholtens and McCarthy continued toward the mountains.

Night of 8–9 October 1982
Lyrkeia, Greece
Lyrkeia sits on the approach to the hardest mountain section. Foden's research had identified a route across five ranges; by night the test was no longer merely about distance, but navigation, climbing and keeping the attempt moving without modern race infrastructure.

9 October 1982
Arcadia, Greece
The pass near Sangas carries the route across Mount Parthenion, the mountain Herodotus explicitly associates with Pheidippides. Foden later recalled running from Sangas toward Tegea for about five hot hours without water after the support vehicle lost him.

Nestani, Greece
Nestani marks the descent from the high crossing into the Arcadian basin. On today's route it remains the first reliable meeting point after the Sangas mountain section—a practical reminder of how exposed the RAF runners were during the 1982 experiment.

Alea–Tegea, Greece
Tegea mattered because Herodotus located Mount Parthenion above it. For Foden, that single ancient clue helped anchor a plausible southern line toward Sparta; the current race roadbook still records the Tegea square at 193.9 kilometres.

Sparta, Greece
All three reached the statue of Leonidas in under forty hours: John Scholtens first, John Foden about half an hour later after roughly 36 hours, and John McCarthy before the forty-hour mark. The experiment demonstrated physical possibility, not archaeological certainty. Its success directly inspired the first international Spartathlon in 1983.
