Borges’ Buenos Aires — The City Behind the Stories

Borges grew up in Palermo when it was still a rougher northern edge of Buenos Aires. His family home stood on the street now named Jorge Luis Borges. He spent much of childhood indoors among books and later admitted that the famous world of local compadritos and knife fighters was something his imagination took up more strongly than his childhood experience did. That gap matters. The Palermo in Borges is partly a real neighbourhood and partly a city reconstructed from stories, memory and reading. Nearby poet Evaristo Carriego had written about the local world Borges later turned into literary material.

Evaristo Carriego lived nearby and wrote about the Palermo that surrounded him. Borges later wrote a book about Carriego, but the subject expanded into something larger: neighbourhood streets, popular mythology, tango and the city’s outskirts. The house gives us a real address for a process that is harder to map. Borges used another writer to approach a Buenos Aires he had partly missed while growing up inside his family home.

Borges worked at the Miguel Cané municipal library for years. The job left him time to read and write; the library says he used quiet periods for his own work and associates the terrace with the writing of “The Circular Ruins.” His desk and typewriter are still preserved upstairs. This period overlaps with some of the work that made Borges internationally important. The setting was not a grand literary institution but an ordinary municipal library where he could disappear into books and his own pages.

Borges moved to apartment 6B at Maipú 944 in 1944 and kept it as his Buenos Aires residence for decades. It placed him close to Plaza San Martín, bookshops and the centre of the city. For a writer associated with labyrinths and imaginary libraries, much of everyday life happened in a compact area. The distance between home, favourite bookshops and later teaching work could be walked.

Inside Galería del Este at Maipú 971 was Librería La Ciudad, one of Borges’ regular bookshop stops. It sat only a short distance from his apartment. This is the small-scale Borges geography that can disappear behind the famous monuments. Books were not abstract symbols: he lived near shops, libraries and people who supplied a daily life of reading.

Borges became director of Argentina’s National Library in 1955. By then his eyesight had deteriorated severely. He later wrote about the irony of being given hundreds of thousands of books at the same time as darkness. The old National Library building still stands at México 564, and current city tours can visit Borges’ former office. The place turns one of the best-known facts about Borges into something physical: a man responsible for a vast library he could increasingly no longer read in the ordinary way.

Borges taught English literature at the University of Buenos Aires from the mid-1950s. The former Faculty of Philosophy and Literature at Viamonte 340 anchors that part of his life. Students encountered someone who moved easily between Old English, sagas, detective stories, philosophy and Argentine literature. The range helps explain why his Buenos Aires stories can open into much larger literary worlds without leaving a few city blocks.

Café Tortoni is older than Borges and was used by generations of writers, musicians and artists. Borges was among the literary figures who sat at its tables. It belongs here less as a claim that one famous story was written at one table and more as part of the city’s social infrastructure for writers. Buenos Aires still preserves dozens of historic cafés where reading, argument and conversation were part of cultural life.
