After Jesus: Where the Twelve Went

James is the one member of the Twelve whose death the New Testament records directly: Acts says Herod Agrippa I had him killed with the sword in Jerusalem. Before that, he belonged to Jesus’ closest circle and to the apostolic group around which the city’s first Christian community formed. The Armenian cathedral preserves a later tradition that James’s head rests here, while Santiago de Compostela claims the rest of his relics. Those relic stories are medieval and disputed; what is historically firm is that James was executed in Jerusalem, and his prominence may explain why Herod singled him out.

A late-second-century tradition quoted by Eusebius says John remained in Ephesus into the reign of Trajan and guided the churches of Roman Asia. Polycrates of Ephesus likewise remembered John as a witness and teacher who died in the city. That memory helped make Ephesus a major centre of Johannine Christianity, later marked by a basilica over his traditional tomb. The association is early and comparatively strong, although the New Testament itself does not narrate John’s move to Ephesus or specify how he died; tradition generally says he died naturally.

Polycrates of Ephesus, writing around the end of the second century and quoted by Eusebius, says that Philip, one of the Twelve, died at Hierapolis. The city’s later martyrium and tomb complex turned that local memory into one of the clearest archaeological landscapes associated with an apostle. Philip’s remembered presence strengthened Hierapolis as a Christian pilgrimage centre in late antiquity. There is still a caution: early texts can blur Philip the Apostle with Philip the Evangelist, whose prophetic daughters appear in Acts, so the exact identity behind every Hierapolis tradition remains debated.

No New Testament narrative follows Bartholomew after Easter. Later sources send him variously to ‘India,’ Arabia, Armenia and other regions; an Armenian tradition places his martyrdom near historic Albanopolis and eventually anchored his memory at this monastery in the Armenian highlands. The tradition helped Armenia describe its church as apostolic, pairing Bartholomew with Thaddeus. That influence belongs to Armenian religious identity, not secure first-century documentation: even a Vatican historical overview notes that Christianity in Armenia more likely spread through later missionaries from Syria and Cappadocia.

Matthew’s last historically visible location is the Jerusalem community named in Acts. Later accounts disagree sharply: they place his preaching in regions called Ethiopia, Persia, Parthia, Macedonia or Syria, and describe incompatible deaths—or no martyrdom at all. There is no defensible coordinate for where he worked or died. Salerno is mapped instead as a place of his later reception: the cathedral says relics attributed to Matthew were installed in its crypt in 1081, making him the city’s patron. This point records Matthew’s enormous posthumous influence while being explicit that the relic tradition cannot settle his first-century travels or death.

The New Testament does not describe Thomas’s later mission. Origen’s tradition, preserved by Eusebius, assigns him Parthia, while the early-third-century Acts of Thomas sends him to ‘India.’ Later South Indian tradition says he founded Christian communities, was killed near Chennai and was buried at Mylapore. The Thomas Christian churches of India made this apostolic memory foundational to their identity, and his traditional tomb remains a major pilgrimage site. The long and early eastern tradition deserves weight, but the route, dates and identification of ancient ‘India’ remain debated; the Mylapore martyrdom is tradition, not a contemporary record.

Acts names James son of Alphaeus among the apostles gathered in Jerusalem after Jesus’s ascension. That makes his participation in the city’s founding apostolic community the last secure information about him; the traditional Cenacle gives that collective memory a geographic focus rather than claiming an exact room can be proven. Later writers say he preached in Jerusalem and was stoned there, but these stories may confuse him with James the Just, the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem church. Because the identities were merged in parts of Christian tradition, neither James son of Alphaeus’s later ministry nor his place and manner of death can be stated confidently.

The New Testament tells us almost nothing about Jude Thaddeus after Easter. Syriac tradition links a Thaddeus or Addai with Edessa, while Armenian tradition says the apostle evangelized Armenia and was martyred in the Artaz region, where this monastery became the principal focus of his memory. That tradition helped shape the Armenian Church’s apostolic identity and still draws pilgrims to Qareh Kelisa. Identification is difficult: Eusebius’s Edessa story distinguishes the missionary Thaddeus as one of the Seventy, and modern institutional histories caution that Armenia was probably evangelized later from Syria and Cappadocia.

Beyond his name in the apostolic lists, the New Testament gives no account of Simon the Zealot’s later life. Traditions send him to Egypt, North Africa, Britain, the Black Sea, the Caucasus or Persia; a widespread western version pairs him with Jude on a Persian mission, so Susa serves only as a geographic window onto that tradition. The pairing influenced their shared feast and a large body of devotional art, but it cannot locate Simon’s work or death. Even Moses of Chorene, while saying Simon was sent to Persia, admitted he could not establish what Simon did or where he died. Susa is therefore interpretive, not a claimed martyrdom site.
