From a troubled kid in California to an Olympic runner in Hitler’s Berlin. From a bomber crash in the Pacific to 47 days lost at sea, Japanese POW camps and years of trauma after returning home. Follow the real places behind the extraordinary life of Louis Zamperini — athlete, airman, prisoner of war and survivor. The true story behind Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken and Angelina Jolie’s film.
What happened to the Twelve after Jesus? The evidence is uneven: Acts follows a few apostles closely, early Christian writers preserve several strong memories, and later churches tell traditions that often disagree. This trace maps one meaningful place for each apostle, including Matthias in place of Judas Iscariot, while keeping documented history separate from tradition.
Follow Christopher Columbus from a documented family home in Genoa through the negotiations, ports and Atlantic crossings that transformed his life—and the world. This trace does not present him as the person who “discovered America”: Indigenous peoples had inhabited the Americas for millennia, and a Norse settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows predates 1492 by almost five centuries. Instead, it follows the places where Columbus’s westward project became a lasting connection between Europe and the Americas, while confronting the conquest, forced labour, enslavement and demographic catastrophe that followed. Several exact sites remain disputed; each such stop is marked as a traditional, commemorative or archaeological identification rather than a certainty.
Follow Titanic from the Belfast shipyard through her final fitting-out, sea trials and maiden-voyage calls to the collision, sinking and Carpathia rescue. The open-ocean markers distinguish an approximate collision area, the position transmitted in distress calls and the wreck coordinates established decades later.
In 1913, Freud worked from Berggasse 19 while Trotsky, Stalin and Hitler were also in Vienna at different points. Their shared city does not establish a meeting; this story marks documented places and keeps their very different histories apart.
Off the coast of Adrasan in southern Türkiye, archaeologists are recovering a cargo of tableware from a ship that sank roughly 2,100 years ago. Plates and bowls had been packed inside one another with protective clay; thousands of pieces have survived. Researchers link the main cargo to Rhosus, now Arsuz, while ancient correspondence and the excavation reports connect that pottery with customers farther west. This map sets the proposed production centre beside the wreck’s coastal setting and Rome, one of the reported markets. It follows the evidence for a trading network, without assigning the lost ship an itinerary we do not know.
1934
Torrance High School, Torrance, Los Angeles, California, United States
This is where Louis Zamperini found running. A troublesome teenager and the son of Italian immigrants, Louie was pushed toward athletics by his older brother Pete. In 1934 he ran the mile in 4:21.2, setting a world interscholastic record that would stand for more than twenty years. The kid known around Torrance for getting into trouble was becoming the “Torrance Tornado.”
1936
Berlin Olympic Stadium, Berlin, Germany
At only 19, Zamperini represented the United States in the 5,000 metres at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He finished eighth, but ran his final lap in just 56 seconds. His finish was remarkable enough that Adolf Hitler asked to meet the young American afterwards. Louie left Berlin dreaming about the 1940 Olympics. They would never happen.
1943
Kualoa Regional Park, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States
On May 27, 1943, Zamperini climbed aboard a B-24D Liberator called the Green Hornet at Kualoa Field. The aircraft had a bad reputation and was normally used for transport rather than combat. That afternoon it was sent on a search mission for another missing aircraft. It would never return.
1943
Palmyra Atoll, United States
Hundreds of miles south of Hawaii, two engines on the Green Hornet failed and the bomber slammed into the Pacific. Eight of the eleven men aboard died. Zamperini, pilot Russell Phillips and tail gunner Francis McNamara survived. Their aircraft disappeared beneath them, leaving only two small life rafts between three men and the largest ocean on Earth.
1943
Wotje, Ratak Chain, Marshall Islands
For 47 days the survivors drifted west across the Pacific. They drank rainwater, caught birds and fish, fought off sharks and survived being strafed by a Japanese aircraft. McNamara died on day 33. Eventually Zamperini and Phillips saw land near Wotje in the Marshall Islands — almost 2,000 miles from where their ordeal had begun. Instead of rescue, they found the enemy.
1943
Kwajalein Atoll, Ralik Chain, Marshall Islands
After their capture, Zamperini and Phillips were taken to Kwajalein — a place prisoners called “Execution Island.” Louie spent roughly six weeks confined in a tiny cell, sick, starving and uncertain whether he would be executed. Back home, nobody knew he was alive. The U.S. government would eventually declare him dead.
1943
Ryūhōji Temple, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Zamperini was shipped to Japan and taken to Ōfuna, a secret naval interrogation center near Kamakura. It was deliberately hidden from the International Red Cross, and many of its prisoners were airmen and submariners considered valuable sources of intelligence. Louie spent more than a year here before being transferred to Tokyo.

1944
Heiwajima, Tokyo, Japan
At Ōmori, Zamperini met Mutsuhiro Watanabe — “The Bird.” Watanabe singled out the famous former Olympian for repeated humiliation and abuse. The camp once stood on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay; today the area is occupied by the Heiwajima leisure and boat-racing complex. Almost nothing in the modern landscape hints at what happened here.

1945
Naoetsu, Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, Japan
In 1945, Zamperini was transferred north to Naoetsu — and discovered that “The Bird” had been transferred there too. Prisoners endured hunger, cold and forced labour, including unloading coal from ships. This was Zamperini's final prison camp. Japan surrendered in August 1945, ending more than two years of captivity. More than half a century later, Louie returned here. In January 1998, aged 80, he carried the Olympic torch through Naoetsu on its way to the Nagano Winter Games. The former camp site is now a Peace Memorial Park.
1949
Washington Blvd South Frontage Road, Los Angeles, California, United States
After the war, Louis Zamperini came home alive but deeply changed. He struggled with nightmares, anger, alcohol and an obsession with revenge against the guards who had tortured him. In 1949, his wife Cynthia persuaded him to attend Billy Graham’s revival meetings held in a huge canvas tent at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Hill Street in Los Angeles. Zamperini initially walked out. When he returned the following night, memories of his survival at sea came back to him — including promises he had made to God while drifting across the Pacific. Zamperini later described that night as the turning point of his life. He stopped drinking, his recurring nightmares began to disappear, and his desire for revenge was replaced by a decision to forgive his former captors. That decision would eventually take him back to Japan.
1950
Higashiikebukuro Central Park, Tokyo, Japan
Surviving the war did not immediately free Zamperini from it. He returned home with nightmares, anger and a drinking problem. After attending Billy Graham's 1949 Los Angeles crusade, Zamperini later said he abandoned his desire for revenge. In 1950 he returned to Japan and visited Sugamo Prison, where many convicted Japanese war criminals were being held. He met former guards and told them he forgave them. The man he most wanted to see — Mutsuhiro Watanabe — was not there. Sugamo Prison was later demolished. Sunshine City and Sunshine 60 now occupy the former prison grounds; a stone monument in Higashi-Ikebukuro Central Park remembers the site's history.
