Before cinema became a mass spectacle, Louis Le Prince recorded moving images in Leeds. In September 1890 he disappeared during a visit to France. A filmed bridge and the station associated with his reported final journey connect his surviving work to the gap in his biography.
On 17 July 2010, nineteen-year-old Iwona Wieczorek left a Sopot nightclub and walked towards Gdańsk. A final CCTV recording near a beach entrance became the fixed point in a long search. These two places follow documented evidence; they do not reconstruct what happened after she left the camera’s view.
A man using the name Dan Cooper boarded a flight in Portland on 24 November 1971, collected ransom in Seattle, then disappeared from the aircraft before it reached Reno. The airports are known; his identity, landing place and fate remain unresolved.
On 15 December 1944, bandleader Glenn Miller left RAF Twinwood Farm for Paris in a small military aircraft. It never arrived. The former airfield and his memorial in Cambridgeshire tell a story of wartime music, a missing flight and remembrance without recovered remains.
In December 1926, Agatha Christie became the subject of a nationwide search after her car was found abandoned in Surrey. Eleven days after she disappeared, she was found alive in a Harrogate hotel. This is a resolved disappearance, although explanations of those days remain debated.
On 2 July 1937 Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan left Lae, New Guinea, aiming for Howland Island. The radio trail ends over the central Pacific, then turns into an unprecedented sea-and-air search. This trace follows the last confirmed departure point, the intended landing site, and a later search hypothesis so the disappearance can be read as a map of the record itself.

Leeds Bridge, Leeds, England
Traffic and pedestrians crossing Leeds Bridge became subjects for Le Prince’s pioneering moving pictures in 1888. His short recording preserves an ordinary urban scene from the earliest years of film. The pin marks the bridge he filmed, not the position of his camera. Leeds Museums notes the commemorative plaque that now marks its connection to him.

September 1890
Dijon-Ville railway station, Dijon, France
After visiting his brother in Dijon, Le Prince reportedly boarded a train for Paris. The University of Leeds describes this departure cautiously: he apparently boarded, then vanished. The station pin locates the journey’s reported starting point; no platform or place of disappearance is established. His fate remains unknown, and competing explanations are not proven conclusions.
