Elsinore: Ian Charleson’s Final Hamlet Through the Places That Shaped It

Charleson attended the University of Edinburgh from 1967 to 1970. He initially studied architecture, but acting increasingly dominated his student life: he performed with the university drama society, directed plays, designed costumes and appeared during the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe. Old College is used here as a representative marker for the university rather than as a claim that a specific Charleson performance happened inside this building. The important geographic shift is from school-level performance in Edinburgh into the university theatre culture that pushed him toward acting professionally.

After Edinburgh and two years at LAMDA, Charleson joined the Young Vic in 1973. It was one of the first major London stages in a career that would move between theatre and film while repeatedly returning to Shakespeare. The Young Vic helps bridge the map between Charleson’s Edinburgh training and the National Theatre. Elsinore concentrates on the end of his career, but that final Hamlet came after almost two decades of professional stage work.

At the Royal Free Hospital, Professor Margaret Johnson was Ian Charleson’s doctor during the final period of his illness. Johnson had become the UK’s first dedicated HIV physician and helped establish open-access HIV care at the hospital. This place is central to both the true story and Elsinore. The hospital later named the Ian Charleson Day Centre in his memory, extending the connection between one actor’s public acknowledgement of AIDS and a London service that continues to provide HIV care.

The National Theatre is the centre of Elsinore’s story. After Daniel Day-Lewis left Richard Eyre’s 1989 production of Hamlet, Charleson stepped into the title role while seriously ill. His final performances at the Olivier Theatre became the last stage work of his career. The National Theatre archive identifies the 1989 Hamlet production with the Olivier Theatre, while the University of Edinburgh records this return to Hamlet as Charleson’s final stage role. The 2026 film also used the National Theatre exterior and Queen’s Walk, so the building functions on the map as both historical site and filming location.

Elsinore also filmed at Prospect Cottage, the black timber house and garden on the Dungeness shingle that belonged to filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman. In the film, Charleson and Jarman meet outside the cottage, linking two British artists whose lives were shaped by the AIDS crisis. Jarman bought Prospect Cottage in 1986 and was diagnosed HIV-positive that winter. The house became a creative base for his later work and is now preserved as part of his legacy. Its use in Elsinore gives the film’s historical world a real place with its own documented AIDS-era cultural history.
